Roger Binny walked out when son Stuart's name came up in selection meeting for World Cup
According to the Times of India, Roger Binny recused himself when his son Stuart Binny’s name came up during the World Cup selection meeting on Tuesday. The Indian selectors had met to pick the Indian squad for the World Cup and the selection of Stuart has come under criticism from some quarters.
A BCCI official told India’s leading English daily that the senior Binny always stays out of the room when his son’s name pops up during a selection meeting and it was no different this time around.
"He stayed 'out of the room' like always, as we deliberated on his son's inclusion," the board official said.
Roger also clarified why he was late to the selection meeting on Tuesday. There was confusion at the BCCI headquarters after the senior Binny hadn’t shown up at 1 pm, the time at which the meeting was scheduled to start.
"I was stuck at the Bangalore airport as we were offloaded from the plane. There is nothing more to it," Binny said.
Speaking about how he felt about the inclusion of his son, Binny said: "Anyone would be proud."
Roger and Stuart have become the fourth father-son duo to represent their country in World Cup cricket, following Lance and Chris Cairns (New Zealand), Don and Derek Pringle and Chris and Stuart Broad (England).
