Rohit Sharma misses a golden opportunity to be No. 1 in the ODI rankings

Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli are currently the top two ODI batsmen in the world, and the ICC ODI rankings for batsmen reflect the same. The Indian captain has topped the ODI rankings for a long time, while the vice-captain has not been not far away, and he is catching up with Kohli.

Virat Kohli has been constantly scoring centuries for India in ODI cricket, which has kept him firmly in first place. Rohit, on the other hand, has scored at least one century in the last ten ODI series for India, which is a world record. The streak came to an end when he failed to score a century in the recently concluded series against New Zeland.

India won the first three ODIs, along with the series against New Zealand. Captain Kohli opted to rest for the last two ODIs as well as the T20I series. The Delhi-ite had 896 points after the third ODI, whereas stand-in captain Rohit had 876 points, with the difference between these two being just twenty points.

Kohli lost 9 points due to missing out on the final two ODIs, and Rohit had a wonderful opportunity to claim the number one spot. If he had scored a century in either of these two ODIs, he would have gotten considerable points to go past Kohli to become the world's number 1 ODI batsman for the first time in his career.

Unfortunately, the Mumbaikar managed to score only seven and two in the final two ODIs. Not only did he miss the opportunity to reach the top, he also lost crucial points for the failures in those two innings . Currently Kohli, is at the number one position with 887 points and Rohit at number two with 854 points.

These two will get another opportunity to compete with each other when Australia tours India for a five-match ODI series in February. This healthy competition between the two modern-day legends could serve the Indian batting line-up well in the future.
