South Africa (SA-W) and England (EN-W) will lock horns in the 13th match of the Women’s World Cup 2022 on Monday, March 14, at Bay Oval in Mount Maunganui.

Defending champions England, led by Heather Knight, have looked a tad rusty in the mega event after performing poorly in the Ashes. Having lost both their games, they are placed in the bottom half of the table, above only Bangladesh and Pakistan.

England lost to the West Indies Women by seven runs in their previous match on March 9. After being sent in to bat, the Caribbean team put up a respectable score of 225 for six on the board. Deandra Dottin and Hayley Matthews’ 81-run stand set the tone for the innings.

Sophie Ecclestone pinned Stafanie Taylor and Kycia Knight in quick succession, but Chedean Nation and Shemaine Campbelle stitched a 123-run stand for the fifth wicket. Ecclestone was the pick of the England bowlers as she scalped three wickets and bowled at an economy of two.

England lost half of their side in the run-chase with their score being 94 in the 26th over. Tammy Beaumont looked good for her 46 before Anisa Mohammed trapped her plumb in front. Danielle Wyatt and Sophie Dunkley scored in their 30s to take England closer to the target.

With 69 runs needed off 15.1 overs and two wickets in hand, Ecclestone and Kate Cross tried their level best. The duo put on 61 runs before Mohammad separated the duo after running out Cross. Then she cleaned up Anya Shrubsole to hand England a defeat.

South Africa, led by Sune Luus, on the other hand, are unbeaten in the tournament, having won both their matches. They defeated Pakistan Women by six runs in their previous game. Laura Wolvaardt and skipper Luus scored fifties to help South Africa post 223 for nine on the board.

South Africa were always ahead of the 8-ball in Pakistan’s run-chase, but Maroof and Co. kept hanging in. Omaima Sohail and Nida Dar notched fifties to take Pakistan close. But Shabnim Ismail bowled brilliantly in the last over to fetch the win for South Africa.

South Africa won their first two games, but didn’t look convincing in their approach. England have mostly dominated them in ODI cricket, winning 29 out of 39 matches. In World Cups, England have lost once in six matches against South Africa.

Hence, Heather Knight and Co. are the favorites to win.

Prediction: England Women to win the match.
