World Cup warm-up game: Scotland inflict a 179-run defeat on Ireland

Alasdair Evans was pick of the bowlers for Scotland

Scotland defeated Ireland by a whopping margin of 179 runs in their warm-up match at the Blacktown Olympic Park Oval, Sydney, on Tuesday. Opting to bat first, the Scots posted a more than competitive total of 296 for 9 in their 50 overs. Matt Machan scored a 108-ball 103, sharing a 96-run stand for the fourth wicket with captain Preston Mommsen who helped himself to 56.

Once Mommsen departed, Machan put on yet another valuable stand of 92 runs with Richie Barrington, who got a half-century of his own. For the Irish, Max Sorenson was the pick of the bowlers, with figures of 3 for 55 in 10 overs.

In their pursuit of 297, Ireland got off to a good start with captain William Porterfield and Paul Stirling stitching together a 57-run opening partnership. Following Stirling’s dismissal, for 37, none of the remaining batsmen could post any score of substance as the Scotland bowlers wreaked havoc.

Josh Davey picked up 2 wickets, but the real star of the day was medium-pacer Alasdair Evans, who picked up 4 for 17 in his 5 overs to skittle the opposition out for 117.
