Shikhar Dhawan becomes joint-fastest left-handed batsman to reach 5000 ODI runs
India took a commanding 2-0 lead in the series as they defeated New Zealand by 90 runs in the second ODI. Dhawan made a good half-century with the bat and forged a 154-run partnership with Rohit Sharma. Dhawan also played well in the first ODI.
He made an unbeaten 75 and ensured a smooth chase in the end. During the course of this match-winning innings, Dhawan managed to break yet another record in One Day Internationals.
Dhawan entered the 5000-run club in his 118th innings in ODI cricket. For a left-handed batsman, Dhawan is the joint-fastest to reach this milestone, a record he now shares with Brian Lara. Sourav Ganguly, the former Indian captain, is the third Indian on the elite list. He reached 5000 runs in 126 innings. Dhawan became the joint-fourth fastest batsman to reach 5,000 runs in ODI cricket.
Shikhar Dhawan also became the second fastest Indian, behind Virat Kohli, to reach 5000 runs in ODI cricket. Virat completed 5000 runs in ODI Cricket in his 114th innings.
South Africa’s right-handed batsman Hashim Amla sits comfortably on the top of this list. Amla, who does not get as much attention as some of the other players in this list, is the fastest to 5000 runs in ODI cricket at the moment. Amla reached 5000 runs in 101 innings.
Vivian Richards and Virat Kohli are in the second place as they reached the milestone in 114 innings. Interestingly, Kane Williamson took an innings more than Dhawan to reach 5000 runs in ODIs. India's batting maestro Sachin Tendulkar is way down the list as he took 138 innings to reach the landmark. Dhawan will also become the fastest Indian to 6000 runs if he reaches the milestone in 135 ODI innings, which is a huge possibility.
