Wisden names Shikhar Dhawan among five Cricketers of the Year

India batsman Shikhar Dhawan celebrates his century.

Wisden have announced their five Cricketers of the Year award winners, and Indian batsman Shikhar Dhawan is one of five winners alongside Australian pacer Ryan Harris and opening batsman Chris Rogers, England’s Joe Root and Charlotte Edwards, the England Women’s team captain.

Dhawan was named as the player of the tournament at the Champions Trophy, following his staggering performance as he scored 363 runs from five matches, which included two hundreds against against South Africa and West Indies and one half-century.  He finished the tournament with an average of 90.75, well worthy of the award.

Australian cricketers Ryan Harris and Chris Rogers were selected for their brilliant performance in the Ashes series in England, Harris was the leading wicket-taker for Australia, while Rogers amassed 367 runs in the five tests they had played against England. England’s opening batsman Joe Root made a name for himself with his century at Lord’s thus becoming the youngest Englishman to do so.

England women’s team captain Charlotte Edwards became the second woman after Claire Taylor to win the prestigious award. She was honoured for her performance in England’s back-to-back victories in the Ashes.

“In winning the Ashes home and away, Edwards crowned an outstanding career as an England cricketer. In November 2013 she became the ?rst person to captain England in 100 one-day internationals – the most by a man is (Andrew) Strauss’s 62 – and she has scored more 50-over and Twenty20 International runs than any woman,” read a statement released by Wisden.

The recipients are chosen by the editor of the Wisden Cricketers’ Almanack, and are based on the performance of the players in the English cricket season. It is also worth mentioning that players cannot be chosen for the award more than once.

South Africa’s Hashim Amla, Jacques Kallis and Dale Steyn were last year’s winners alongside South African-born English cricketer Nick Compton and West Indies batsman Marlon Samuels.
