KSCA Trophy Day 2: Shreyas Iyer, Deepak Hooda score centuries; Yuzvendra Chahal, Shreyas Gopal claim fifers

Shreyas Iyer’s 93-ball 103 lit up the KSCA Trophy’s second day

The 2016/17 Indian domestic cricket season has been flagged off with the KSCA Dr (Capt) K Thimmappaiah memorial all-India invitational tournament in Karnataka, where top teams like Mumbai and Punjab are participating. Some players have got their seasons off to auspicious starts, in this tournament which is often an indication of how the Ranji Trophy season shall proceed immediately afterwards.

At the end of Day 2 of the first round of the four-day matches on Saturday, Mumbai are the only side with a distinct advantage over their opponents – Gujarat having lost four quick second innings wickets at the end of the day with a slender lead of 5 runs.

Mumbai’s score had been propelled by a ton by Shreyas Iyer, who predictably got to the mark at a strike rate in excess of 100. His 93-ball 103 had been littered with 12 fours and three sixes, the most attacking batting display in the tournament yet.

Shreyas Gopal has been in scintillating form in recent times, and Tripura collapsed in front of his bowling on Day 2, after having reached a comfortable position at the end of Day 1. Gopal scalped six Tripura wickets for 90 runs, before Abhishek Reddy, who recently scored a double ton, and CM Gautam took KSCA XI to within 137 runs of Tripura, with half the batting left to come.

Bengal rode on a partnership between Abhimanyu Easwaran and Sudip Chatterjee, who is unbeaten on 89, to reach an advantageous position against the KSCA Colts. Vidarbha’s Akshay Karnewar scored 126* to peg back KSCA President’s XI in the other match involving one of the home teams.

The Baroda vs Haryana match is interestingly poised, with Haryana just having begun their reply to a first innings score of 337. Deepak Hooda (127) and Yusuf Pathan (33) were among the runs for Baroda, while the wrecker-in-chief was Yuzvendra Chahal(5/124).
