Sourav Ganguly to write book titled 'A Century is Not Enough'

Sourav Ganguly to co-author cricket book ‘A Century is Not Enough’

In a press conference in Kolkata on Tuesday, it was announced that former India captain Sourav Ganguly is about to write a book on his life and times on and off the cricket pitch. The book, titled A Century is Not Enough, will be co-authored by Gautam Bhattacharya and published by Juggernaut Books. It shall be available in bookstores from early next year.

Promising that the book shall be frank, colourful and inspiring, the publishers said that they expect the book to attain the status of a classic sports book in years to come. The contents of the book shall draw from all the highs Ganguly enjoyed in his career (the debut century at Lord’s, leading India to a new age, the 2003 World Cup) as well as the lows – the battles he had to fight on his way to the glories.

The book is not an autobiography though and deals with the challenges a sportsman faces.

Ganguly said, “I am extremely delighted to associate myself with Juggernaut and jointly we expect to deliver a great book.”

Publisher Chiki Sarkar said, “Sourav Ganguly is one of India’s greatest captains, and one of the most interesting cricketers we have ever produced. We believe A Century Is Not Enough will become a book that readers – and not just cricket fans – will turn to again and again.”

Ganguly has been one of Indian cricket history’s most interesting characters, and his story is something a lot of people would want to know. There are several unexplained incidents from his career as well, some of which might get light thrown on in the book.

It has also been thought that Ganguly has not had his entire say about Greg Chappell in public yet. His thoughts and processes from that chapter are also expected to find a place in the new book.

Speaking about selecting the India coach, the 43-year-old said, "It's amazing how life is. Twenty years back I first played for the country. Now I have the opportunity to select a coach. I messed it up in 2005-06 (indirectly pointing to the appointment of Greg Chappell when he was captaining India) and I have been given the opportunity again."

He also said that he can consider applying for the India coach’s position himself. He said, "I have never had the chance of giving an interview (for the team India coaching job). Hopefully, someday will sit for it."

One thing is for sure – while Sachin Tendulkar’s book Playing it My Way left many fans disappointed with how restrained he had been in writing the book, no such fears need to be entertained with Sourav. As was made evident at the press event, and as we have come to learn about Sourav through watching him over the years, A Century is Not Enough will be a no-holds-barred account.
