South Africa vs Australia, 2nd ODI Stats: Faf du Plessis becomes first batsman to score centuries in all formats at a single venue

Faf du Plessis did no batsman had ever done in cricket’s illustrious history

Faf du Plessis’ century and fifties from Rilee Rossouw and JP Duminy helped South Africa demolish Australia by 142 runs in the second ODI at Johannesburg and take a 2-0 lead in the five-match series. Chasing 362 for victory, Australia didn’t really get going despite fifties from David Warner and Travis Head.

After winning the toss, Australia elected to field and didn’t get off to a great start. Quinton de Kock and Rossouw put on 70 for the opening wicket but the Proteas were just getting started. At the fall of de Kock’s wicket, the Proteas captain walked out and scored a blistering century.

Ably supported by Rossouw and Duminy, du Plessis ensured that South Africa put on a massive 361/6 in their 50 overs. In reply, Australia needed to get off to a flyer but lost both Aaron Finch and Steven Smith inside the first 10 overs.

Although David Warner got to his fifty, he gave his wicket away to JP Duminy and having lost half the side with just 114 on the board, the visitors never really recovered from that. Head, Matthew Wade and John Hastings all chipped but eventually they were bundled out for 219 in the 38th over.

Here are some interesting numbers from the second ODI:

1 – Faf du Plessis became the first player to score an international hundred across all three formats at the same venue. He scored a hundred in a T20I, ODI and Test at the Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg.

2 – Du Plessis’ century also meant that he became only the second batsman after Tillakaratne Dilshan to score a century as captain across all three formats of the game. His T20I hundred came against West Indies last year while the Test and ODI hundred came against New Zealand and Australia this year.

2 – Since 1975, Joe Mennie and Chris Tremain are the second pair of Australian ODI debutants to open the bowling after Andy Bichel and Anthony Stuart in 1997.

4 – Four of the last opening partnerships for South Africa in ODIs have been worth at least 50. Of them, three have been century partnerships and this game’s partnership was worth 70. Their last six opening partnerships in ODIs read 145, 159, 16, 8*, 182 and 70.

32 – Quinton de Kock holds the South African record for the fastest to 1,000 ODI runs by getting there in just 21 innings ahead of Hashim Amla’s 24. Rilee Rossouw got to his in 32 innings and joins Gary Kirsten, Jacques Kallis and Neil McKenzie who all got there in 32 innings. Only six players have got there faster than Rossouw.

82 – Joe Mennie conceded 82 runs in his 10 overs, which is the most by an Australian bowler on ODI debut. The previous record was held by Steve Smith who conceded 78 against West Indies in 2010 and Chris Tremain conceded 78 in this match.

142 – South Africa’s 142-run victory over Australia was their second-biggest in terms of runs over Australia in ODIs. Their biggest remains the 196-win at Cape Town in 2006.

150 – Du Plessis and Duminy added 150 for the third wicket against Australia, which is the second-highest partnership for the Proteas at home against Australia behind Graeme Smith and Herschelle Gibbs’ 175-run stand at the same venue in 2006.

334 – Australia’s highest successful run chase in ODIs is the 334 they managed against England at SCG in 2011. They failed to chase 362 in this game.
