South Africa coach sounds warning for Jacques Kallis in ODIs with 2015 World Cup in view
Jacques Kallis needs to take a tough call on his future in the ODI format for South Africa on his next meeting with coach Russell Domingo.
According to ESPNCricinfo, Domingo wants Kallis to commit himself to playing limited overs cricket if he wants to be in consideration for the 2015 ICC World Cup.
South African coach Russel Domingo has fired a warning to Jacques Kallis stating that allrounder needs to play ODI cricket more often if he wants to be in the team for 2015 World Cup. Kallis last played an ODI for South Africa way back in February last year against New Zealand.
“If Jacques wants to play in the 2015 World Cup, he will have to play some ODI cricket for us along the way,” Domingo said. “It will not be fair on other players if it doesn’t happen that way.”
Kallis was selected in part South Africa’s squad for Champions Trophy in June, but he pulled out at the last minute citing ‘personal reasons’, leaving South Africa in disarray.
Domingo has made it clear that he wants a select group of players to work with in order to prepare for the 2015 World Cup. He wants the younger players like JP Duminy and Faf du Plessis to form the nucleus of the side, and if Kallis wants to be part of that squad, he will have to start playing regular ODI cricket soon.
Domingo revealed he has a specific timeframe in mind, and he will let Kallis know in due course.
“As a South African unit, we’ve got to be able to live without Jacques Kallis,” he said. “We’ve had him around for so long but we’ve got to realise there will be a day when he will no longer be around.”
Kallis has not played since this year’s IPL but is expected to take part in two-Test series against Pakistan in the UAE this October.
