South Africa vs Australia 5th ODI Stats: Australia whitewashed 5-0 for the first time in ODIs

David Warner’s 173 went in vain as Australia lost the final ODI

David Warner’s 173 wasn’t enough as South Africa defended 328 and claimed a 31-run win over Australia in the final ODI at Cape Town. Victory meant that Australia were whitewashed 5-0 by a Proteas side that did not have AB de Villiers.

After winning the toss and electing to bat first, South Africa put on 327/8 courtesy of Rilee Rossouw’s century. The 178-run partnership for the fourth wicket partnership between Rossouw and JP Duminy helped the Proteas register a massive total despite struggling at 52/3 in the 11th over.

While Until David Warner was at the crease, Australia still had a chance. Although he didn’t have much support from the rest of the top order, he single-handedly took Australia close but in the end, it wasn’t enough as he was run-out and thus the visitors lost the game after being bowled out for 296.

Here are some interesting statistical highlights from the final ODI:

1 – This is the first time that Australia have been whitewashed 5-0 in an ODI series.  Their previous worst result in a five-match ODI series was the 4-0 series loss to England in 2012.

2 – Australia became the first world champion side to be whitewashed in two different formats this year. They had the ICC Test Championship Mace when they were turned over 3-0 by Sri Lanka and they are now No.1 in ODIs and reigning world cup winners as they lost 5-0. The other world champions, WI also lost in T20Is, 3-0 to Pakistan.

3 – Australia have been whitewashed in all three formats this year. It all began with India’s 3-0 whitewash in T20I, then it was Sri Lanka’s turn to whitewash them 3-0 in Tests and now South Africa did it in ODIs, 5-0.

3 – After Ricky Ponting (who did it twice in 2003 and 2007) and Matthew Hayden (2007), David Warner became the third Australian batsman to score five ODI centuries in a year.
