South Africa vs India 2018: Newlands curator hopeful of action despite rain

What’s the story?

The ongoing Newlands Test match between India and South Africa has been hampered by rain in Capetown and it has already washed out the first session.

However, the curator Evan Flint believes that fans will be able to get some cricketing action as soon as the weather clears out.

"It doesn't look very good at the moment, as the forecast for rain is until late afternoon. Luckily, we are in a middle of a drought so the ground is really firm and very dry so it should not take long (to clear up). Hopefully, we will be able to clean up things in an hour (once the rain goes away)," Evan was as quoted by Cricketnext.

The details

The drainage at Newlands is one of the better ones in South Africa and hence this optimism is definitely not out of place.

Evan also added that owing to the good drainage system in Newlands, they do not cover the whole ground.

Sounding extremely happy with the 22-yards, Flint said that the pitch has help for both the batsmen and bowlers and it has been evident over the past two days that, if the batsmen are willing to apply themselves, there are plenty of runs to be had.

Capetown is facing one of the worst droughts in recent times and hence this rain is welcomed by the locals. Unfortunately, it has come down during the match, which was poised perfectly.

South Africa posted 286 runs in their first innings. India replied with 209. In the second dig, the hosts are currently placed at 65 for 2 and lead by 142 runs.

What’s next?

Despite the rain, the match could well have a result owing to the pace of innings from either side. Also, the forecast for the next two days is clear which is very promising.
