South Africa vs India 2018: Virat Kohli might beat Don Bradman and Vivian Richards

Virat Kohli
Racing ahead plundering records

Stomping out to bat, surveying the field, staring at the bowelers, and then carving them all over the place, this has been the story of Virat Kohli, this has been how we will remember the South African tour for him.

And although he seldom gushes over the records he keeps carving away, the numbers keep stacking up, and Kohli keeps penetrating through them.

Such has been his dominance, that he is now on the cusp of one unimaginable record, a record which was glittering on the record books, a record which might be carved away by the Indian captain!

As the tour winds down, Kohli, who has evoked comparisons with many former great, might well surpass Sir Donald Bradman, perhaps the greatest of all time!

The Indian captain has so far scored a stunning 870 runs on this tour, spanning across 13 innings. Hence, if he scores 104 more runs in the remainder of the T20 series, he will zip past Bradman's tally of 974 runs, which he piled up against England back in 1930 across five Tests.

However, if he manages to peel off 130 more runs in the two innings, he will lead the table and will overtake Sir Vivian Richards, who is the only man to breach the 1000 run mark in a single series. Viv scored 1045 runs (829 in four Tests, 216 runs in three ODIs) against England back in 1976.

While these numbers seem to be quite steep, Kohli is enjoying an extended purple patch in this trip.

He was the leading run-scorer in the Test series with 286 runs and was head and shoulders above anyone else in the ODI series with 558 runs in six ODIs which included three centuries.

The Indian captain batted at number four in the first T20I and he might well stay there to lend balance to the squad. However, if he walks out to open or bat at number three, the 130 run mark might well be in danger!
