Sri Lanka Cricket Executive Shammi Silva demands match-fixing enquiry against Indian cricketer

Shammi Silva(L) of the Sri Lanka Cricket Executive Committee.

Shammi Silva, member of the Sri Lanka Cricket Executive Committee, has written a letter to the new Sri Lanka Sports Minister Navin Dissanayake, to appoint an investigation committee against an Indian cricketer who was allegedly involved in match-fixing during the 2010 Asia Cup tournament in Dambulla, Sri Lanka.

"Considering the importance of the matter, I kindly request you to appoint a special committee to investigate the above matter as early as possible. It is very essential to hold an inquiry by the Ministry of Sports in order to avoid unnecessary interference by vested interest personalities” wrote Silva in his letter.

The letter was dated February 11 and comes on the back of reports that the SLC hierarchy had dodged the Mudgal probe panel investigating Indian cricket's corruption scandals.

Hotel-room incident from 2010

The Mudgal Panel was apparently inquiring about an hotel room Incident in Dambulla, where a well-known Indian batsman was allegedly sharing a room with a woman for a night, during the Asia Cup tournament in 2010. The woman was suspected to have bookie links.

It has been speculated, based on CCTV footage, that the batsman in question is Suresh Raina; but the then BCCI President had cleared his name saying the woman was Raina’s agent.

The tournament had seen India winning the Asia Cup title for the record 5th time. India defeated Sri Lanka by 81 runs in the final. Pakistan and Bangladesh had been the other two nations to take part in the tournament.
