Sri Lanka vs India: KL Rahul's ton puts India in command on Day 1

Rahul scored his second Test ton

India batted well to reach 319 runs at the end of the first day’s play in the second Test match against Sri Lanka at the P Sara stadium in Colombo. KL Rahul scored his second career century and brought India out of the dismal start.

After winning the toss, Virat Kohli led India decided to bat first at the P Sara Stadium. There was continuous rain for the last two days in Colombo.

Murli Vijay was back in the team for India with Stuart Binny and Umesh Yadav also coming in. For Sri Lanka, Dushmantha Chameera replaced injured Pradeep Kaushal. Kumar Sangakkara, who is playing his final Test got the guard of honour as walked into the middle.

Dhammika Prasad was the reason for India's poor start as he struck in the very first over where he trapped Vijay plumb in front for a duck. Prasad didn't stop there as Ajinkya Rahane, who came in at no 3 was lured by a loose delivery and edged it to 3rd slip.

It was KL Rahul and captain Kohli in the middle left with the responsibility to stable India's innings. They didn't disappoint as both found their good touch and started smashing the ball.

India recovered well before lunch as Rahul and Kohli kept ticking the scoreboard at regular intervals. Soon, both the players reached their Test fifties which was followed by 100-plus partnership stand.

India was looking comfortable then until Herath was brought back into the attack. He ended the 164-run stand by getting Kohli out for 78 runs.

Rahul soon got to his 2nd Test century but couldn't survive as he edged Chameera's bouncer to the keeper.

Sri Lanka started to get hold of the game, Herath later dismissed Binny also when the all-rounder gave away a simple catch to mid-off.

Rohit Sharma scored at a good rate in the last session, but he was trapped by Angelo Mathews off Day 1's last delivery. He scored 79 runs which included 5 fours and 1 six.
