Sri Lanka vs India: Lahiru Thirimanne fined 30% match fees for showing dissent
Sri Lanka batsman Lahiru Thirimanne has been fined 30% of his match fees for breaching Level 1 of the ICC Code of Conduct during Day 3 of the ongoing 2nd Test against India at the P.Sara Oval in Colombo on Saturday. Thirimanne’s offence relates to “showing dissent at an Umpire’s decision during an International Match”.
The left-handed batsman had combined well with Angelo Mathews to patiently frustrate the Indian bowlers in the morning session, his score reading 62 off 168 balls when dismissed, his 4th Test half-century.
The incident happened in the 85th over of Sri Lanka’s first innings, when the left-handed batsman stood his ground for a long time despite having been given out by the umpire.
An Ishant Sharma delivery got the slightest of edges off his bat, and Wriddhiman Saha held on. Umpire Bruce Oxenford raised his finger immediately as the Indians went up in spontaneous appeal. However, Thirimanne seemed very disappointed with the decision, and kept standing as the Indians celebrated the breakthrough.
After making his disappointment known by staying his ground and looking at the umpire for a sustained period, Thirimanne left the ground slowly shaking his head.
After the match, on-field umpires Bruce Oxenford and Rod Tucker and third umpire Ruchira Palliyaguruge charged Thirimanne. All Level 1 breaches carry a minimum penalty of an official reprimand and/or a maximum penalty of 50 per cent of a player’s match fee.
Thirimanne admitted the offence and accepted the sanction proposed by Andy Pycroft of the Emirates Elite Panel of ICC Match Referees. There was no formal hearing.
