Sri Lankan super fan Percy entertains Indian players with Hindi songs, ACSU objects
In a funny incident yesterday, cricket super fan Percy Abeysekera, famously known as Uncle Percy was seen hanging out with Indian players in their dressing room, as reported in cricketnext.
It appears that Indian skipper had invited the super fan after the culmination of play on Day three. He was seen singing songs, dancing and having few laughs with the players. Apparently this didn’t go down well with the Anti-corruption officials, who keep a strict vigil on players movements and activities.
It is understood that ACSU ( Anti-corruption and security unit) asked Percy to leave the dressing room. Percy defended himself saying that it was the Indian skipper who had invited him.
“Virat Kohli invited me in, otherwise I would haven't gone there," Percy was quoted as saying. "The Indian players wanted me to sing, and then we hugged each other. That's it," the super fan of Sri Lankan cricket said.
Though this was no way related to corruption or anything, but such visits to the dressing room that too during the match are against the protocol.
There was a time, in the late nineties when any person with some connections could visit the dressing room. In one famous incident, Dawood Ibrahim had visited the Indian players’ dressing room and offered them luxury cars if they won that match.
Regarding Percy, this die-hard fan of Sri Lankan cricket has watched thousands of matches since Lanka got the Test playing status. This octogenarian makes it a point to cheer his team at every overseas tour, despite other responsibilities.
He was awe-struck after Arjuna Ranatunga-led Sri Lankan team lifted the World Cup in '96 and since then has been a loyal fan.
