Team News

The Patriots were beaten by the Guyana Amazon Warriors in a thrilling last over finish. The top-order of the Patriots failed to put up any kind of resistance in their first match as they lost 4 wickets in the first 10 overs. Middle-order batsmen Brad Hodge, Devon Thomas, and Thisara Perera managed to rebuild their innings and lifted them to a total of 164. The Patriots will have to hope that Lendl Simmons and Faf du Plessis find their form with the bat.

The Jamaica Tallawahs will play their first match of this season against the Patriots. Captained by Chris Gayle, the Tallawahs will have their eyes on the prize as they do have the firepower in their squad to do so. After the withdrawal of Sri Lankan pacer Lasith Malinga, the Tallawahs acquired the services of Dale Steyn, adding more excitement to this tournament which keeps getting bigger with every season.

Probable Playing XI

St Kitts and Nevis Patriots:

Batsmen:

The Patriots will most likely go with the same combination of Lendl Simmons and Evin Lewis at the top. The pair didn’t score any runs together and lasted for 5 deliveries against the Guyana Warriors. It is extremely crucial for Simmons to take the charge as he is well experienced in this format and give Lewis some time to settle down. Skipper Faf du Plessis came into bat at his preferred No.3 position against the Warriors and looked threatening when he lasted for his 30 runs. The 31-year-old South African can be destructive once he settles down and can clear the boundary at will. Brad Hodge and Devon Thomas were the saving grace for the team in their first game and have lived up to their reputations. Hodge, in particular, will be the key player against the Tallawahs. The 41-year-old has a wealth of experience, scoring over 7000 runs in this format with a strike-rate of over 130.

All-rounders:

West Indian Jonathan Carter was, unfortunately, run-out before he could make an impact and should be given another chance to prove his mettle. Sri Lankan all-rounder Thisara Perera showed a glimpse of what he is capable of when he hit 2 massive sixes against the Warriors but ended up leaking 51 runs in his 4 overs without a wicket. Perera will need to improve on his bowling to remain a part of the starting line-up. West Indies all-rounder Carlos Brathwaite was impressive with the ball, picking up 2 wickets and conceding 35 runs in his 4 overs.

Bowlers:

Left-arm medium pacer Krishmar Santokie was the pick of the bowlers for the Patriots against the Warriors, conceding just 25 runs and picking up a wicket in his 4 overs. Samuel Badree and Tabraiz Shamsi could lead the spin attack again for the Patriots.

Probable XI: Lendl Simmons, Evin Lewis, Faf du Plessis (Captain), Brad Hodge, Devon Thomas (Wicket-keeper), Jonathan Carter, Thisara Perera, Carlos Brathwaite, Krishmar Santokie, Samuel Badree, Tabraiz Shamsi.

Jamaica Tallawahs:

Batsmen:

Skipper Chris Gayle has been a regular opener for the teams he has played for and will most likely open alongside Sri Lankan legend Kumar Sangakkara. This pair could inflict massive amounts of damage if they get going and give du Plessis a headache in setting the field. Top-order batsman Jonathan Foo could get a game here for the Tallawahs, taking up the No.3 position and providing some support for the middle order. Australian batsman Alex Ross could feature for the Tallawahs as he has been impressive in this format. The 24-year-old has maintained a strike-rate of over 140. West Indian Chadwick Walton will mostly likely be included as the wicket-keeper of the team.

All-rounders:

Bangladeshi all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan could put his left-arm spin to good use for the Tallawahs in addition to his aggressive batting abilities. The 29-year-old player maintains a good strike-rate of 123. Pakistan International Imad Wasim could be considered to play against the Patriots. Wasim can bowl left-arm spin and has a strike-rate of 124 with the bat. Andre Russell was instrumental for the Kolkata Knight Riders in the IPL this year. Russell scores at a massive strike-rate of 166 and is also useful in the bowling department, picking up wickets with the new and old ball.

Bowlers:

South African pacer Dale Steyn could lead the attack for the Tallawahs, swinging at pace with the new ball and causing problems for the batsman. American player Timroy Allen and Kesrick Williams could be used as additional options as seamers.

Probable XI: Chris Gayle (Captain), Kumar Sangakkara, Jonathan Foo, Alex Ross, Chadwick Walton (Wicket-keeper), Shakib Al Hasan, Imad Wasim, Andre Russell, Dale Steyn, Timroy Allen, Kesrick Williams.

Prediction:

The Jamaica Tallawahs will be favourites against the Patriots as they have a mix of talent and experience that is crucial in this format. It should be a good contest between the bat and the ball.
