Stats: Alastair Cook becomes the first Englishman to score 2000 Test runs against India

Cook got to the mark in his 24th match

England skipper Alastair Cook has become the first batsman from his country to notch up 2000 runs against India. The 31-year-old left-hander got to the mark during the opening session of the fourth Test against India in Mumbai on Thursday.

He is now the sixth overseas batsman to achieve the feat, joining the likes of Ricky Ponting, Clive Lloyd, Javed Miandad, Shivnarine Chanderpaul and Michael Clarke to the mark.Cook achieved the mark in his 24th match and has an average of 52.78 against India.

He is also well past the second placed Graham Gooch, who made 1725 runs in 19 matches, followed by Kevin Pietersen and David Gower. Ian Bell also finds a mention in the list, in the sixth spot.

Cook made his international debut against India in Nagpur in 2006 and made a century in the second innings of the game  and ever since then has been one of the pillars of the England batting line-up, amassing runs all over the world.

Earlier this year, he became the first batsman from his country to cross 10000 Test runs against Sri Lanka at Chester-le-Street and also crossed former Australian skipper Steve Waugh for the most number of Test runs earlier in this series.

He was dismissed for 46, stumped off the bowling of Ravindra Jadeja, by Parthiv Patel behind the wickets.  England found themselves at 117-1 at Lunch on Day 1 with debutant Keaton Jennings registering his maiden half-century in Test cricket in his very first innings as an international cricketer.
