Voges and Marsh were involved in a record-breaking partnership

Despite an unbeaten 94 by Darren Bravo, West Indies are staring at the possibility of an innings defeat to Australia in the first Test in Hobart.

The visitors ended day two on 207/6 in reply to Australia’s 583/4 declared. They still need 176 runs to avoid the follow-on and with just four wickets in hand, an innings defeat looks a likely prospect.

Here are some of the statistical highlights from the day:

0 – Number of Times a batsmen has scored 269 in Tests before today- Adam Voges is the first person to score 269 in Tests. Last month, Ross Taylor scored 290 and a month before that, Shoaib Malik scored 245 while Cook 263, all of which were never made before by any batsman in a test innings.

5 – Calendar years in 72 years of Test cricket where West Indies have not made a single fifty plus score for first wicket. Besides 2015, they achieved this feat in 1935, 1939, 1966 and 1982. 

5 – Number of Hundreds Darren Bravo has scored at foreign soil- while in his country he has scored only 1. His best of 218 has also come in an away game, vs New Zealand.

5.13- the run rate of the 449-run partnership between Adam Voges and Shaun Marsh- the best among all partnerships of 300 or more in Australia- There have been sixteen 300 plus partnerships in Australia. Around the globe, it is the 3rd quickest partnership of 300 or more, among 92 such partnerships. The best belongs to a 410-run partnership between Sehwag and Dravid vs Pakistan. At the end of last day’s play, the run rate was 4.35 for this partnership.

15.23 – The opening average for West Indies in this year- which is the lowest among all the teams. In 17 innings this year, West Indian openers have made 259 runs for 1st wicket with a highest of 35. They are the only team to have 0 fifty plus opening stand this year.

54.40 – Darren Bravo’s Average in Away Tests – the best for any West Indian batsmen in away tests (min 1000 runs). His cousin Brian Lara averages 47.80 in away tests. Interestingly, at home, Bravo averages only 31.25.

94.38 – the Strike Rate of Adam Voges in this innings of 269*- among players who have scored at least 250 runs in an innings, his strike rate is best (barring Virendar Sehwag). Sehwag has thrice scored in excess of 250 at a strike rate of 100 plus.

182 – Runs Scored by Shaun Marsh in this innings- it is his personal best going past 148 he made vs South Africa at Centurion. 

269* – runs Adam Voges have made in this game- which is highest for any player in Hobart going past Ponting’s 209 and Sangakkara’s 192. It is also the highest for any Australian batsmen playing at no. 4.

449 – runs gathered by Adam Voges and Shaun Marsh for 4th wicket in 1st innings- It is the highest 4th wicket stand in Tests- going past 437 runs made by Jayawardene and Samaraweera vs Pakistan in 2009. It is also the 3rd highest stand for any wicket in the first innings of a Test match and overall 6th highest just below the twin 451 stands.  It is also the highest stand for any wicket in Australia.

1935 – The last and only time when West Indies had a lower 1st wicket average in a single calendar than 15.23 in 2015. In 1935, West Indain openers made 83 runs for 1st wicket with a highest of 32. 

1946 – The last and only the second time before today when any Australian pair has put on more than 400 runs for any wicket. On 18 Aug 1934, Bradman and Ponsford had made 451 runs against England at Oval while Sid Barnes and Bradman made 405 against England on 13 Dec 1946 at Sydney.

1957 – Last and only time before today that any pair in the Test history have collected more than 400 runs for a partnership against West Indies. Before 449 by Voges and Marsh, Englishmen Peter May and Colin Cowdrey had gathered 411 runs on 30 May 1957 at Birmingham.
