Stats: Australia vs India 2016, 1st ODI - Record-breaking Rohit Sharma

It was records aplenty for Rohit Sharma in the first ODI

Rohit Sharma's unbeaten 171 wasn’t enough as centuries from Steven Smith and George Bailey helped Australia take a 1-0 lead in the five-match ODI series against India. After choosing to bat India put on 309/3, but Smith and Bailey ensured that was chased with ease.

A massive second-wicket partnership between Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli helped set the platform for India's 309/3, which wasn’t enough on a flat WACA pitch. Smith scored his highest ODI score and Bailey added a century and the pair put on the second 200+ partnership of the match to secure a win for the hosts.

Here are some of the records that were broken and created in the match.

0 – Before Sran dismissed both Finch and Warner, there have been four Indian bowlers who have dismissed both the openers on ODI debut but none of them played more than 10 ODIs. A Salvi, T Yohannnan, M Venkataramana and E Solkar were the four bowlers whose record Sran will be hoping to break.

1 – First time in the history of ODIs that there have been two double-century partnerships in the same match. The partnership between Kohli and Rohit was worth 207 while the partnership between Smith and Bailey was 242.

3 – Australia have never taken fewer than three wickets in a completed ODI innings. This was the fourth instance of them taking just three wickets, with the previous three occurring in 1983 (against WI), 1994 and 2002 (both against SA).

3 – No Indian batsman has more ODI centuries against Australia in Australia than Rohit Sharma, who has three. VVS Laxman is the only other batsman to score three ODI tons in Australia.

4 – This was Rohit Sharma's fourth score of 150+, equalling the record for highest such score, currently held by Chris Gayle and Sanath Jayasuriya. Only Sachin Tendulkar (5) has more 150+ scores in ODIs.

4 – Rohit’s 171* is the fourth-highest score by a batsman in a losing cause. The highest in this regard is by Zimbabwe's Charles Coventry, who scored 194* against Bangladesh but still was on the losing side.

7 – Kohli now holds the record for being involved in the most 200+ partnerships by an Indian batsman. He overtakes the previous record  holders Tendulkar and Ganguly, who both had 6 each.

7 – Rohit Sharma's last seven ODI hundreds have all been scores of 135+. Including this innings, his last seven centuries read 171*, 150, 137, 138, 264, 209, 141*. In terms of most such innings, he now has the second-highest with 7 along with Ganguly, only behind Tendulkar's 15.

8 – This was the eighth 200+ run ODI partnership for India outside Asia. The last such instance was in 2009 when Gautam Gambhir and Virender Sehwag put on 201*.

9 – Sachin holds the record for most centuries in India-Australia matches with 9.  Ricky Ponting is second with 6 while Rohit is now joint-third with Laxman on 4 centuries.

15.83 – Prior to this match, Kohli's average against Australia in Australia over 7 ODI innings was just 15.83. However, at home against the same opponents, he averages 75.14 across 9 innings. Against all other test nations in their own turf, he averages at least 30.

16 – Barinder Sran became the 16th Indian player to make his ODI debut in Australia. The last player to make his debut down under was Manoj Tiwary in the 2008 CB series.

 

19 – Rohit is the fastest to reach 1,000 ODI runs against Australia. He took just 19 innings to achieve that milestone, beating the previous record held by Sachin Tendulkar and Brian Lara.

36 – Nobody has captained more India-Australia ODIs than MS Dhoni. This is his 36th match as captain, beating Ricky Ponting's record of 35.

68.46 – Rohit Sharma now has the highest ODI average of any batsman against Australia (min 500 runs). His unbeaten knock helped him overtake AB de Villiers, who had an average of 62.57.

85 – George Bailey now has the highest ODI average of any batsman against India (min 500 runs). His 112 helped him overtake Quinton de Kock, who had an average of 74.11.

91 – Although he fell 9 short of a well-deserved century, it was still Virat Kohli's highest score against the Aussies down under. Before today, his  previous highest score against Australia in Australia was 31 at the MCG.

149 – Steven Smith recorded his highest ODI score, en route to guiding his side to victory. Despite scoring four centuries previously, his highest was 105 before this game.

171* – Rohit's unbeaten 171 is the highest ODI score by any batsman against Australia in Australia, beating Viv Richards' 153* in 1979. It is also the fifth-highest ODI score by any batsman in Australia.

207 – The second-wicket partnership between Kohli and Rohit is now the highest for that wicket by an Indian pair against Australia, beating the previous best of 199 held by Laxman and Tendulkar.

242 – The partnership between Steven Smith and George Bailey was the fourth-highest stand in ODIs for Australia. The highest stand for any wicket in ODIs for the Aussies belongs to Steven Smith and David Warner, who added 260 against Afghanistan in the 2015 World Cup, also at the same ground.

274 – Before Australia chased 310, the highest successful chase at Perth was 274/9, achieved by Pakistan against Australia in 1987. only twice has a score greater than 310 has been chased by any side in an ODI in Australia.

309 – India's total of 309/3 is now their highest ODI total against Australia in Australia. Their previous-best was 303/4 at Brisbane in 2004.

2013 – 2013 was the last time Australia had two ODI debutants in the side. Against Sri Lanka at the Adelaide Oval in January 2013, it was Kane Richardson and Ben Cutting making their baggy green debut.
