Stats: Australia vs New Zealand, 3rd Test Day One - Starc shines under lights

Starc made the pink ball sing under lights

It was advantage Australia at the end of day one of the first Day-Night Test as the hosts bundled New Zealand out for 202, before ending the day 148 runs behind with eight wickets in hand.

The Kiwis, who won the toss and chose to bat, lost wickets at regular intervals to concede the advantage back to the hosts. Although they removed both openers before the end of the day, their low total means they will have to be on their game on day two, if they are to ensure that they don’t concede a lead.

Here are some of the vital statistics from the first-ever Day-Night Test:

2 – Since 1996, Australia have lost just two Tests at Adelaide. Of the 20 they have played, they have won 14 and drawn four.

9 – In the 20 Tests since 1997, nine teams have scored more than 500 in their first innings at Adelaide. Only two have been bowled out for less than 300 in the first innings of a Test.

9.71 – As one of the most-experienced players when it comes to day-night first-class games, Burns’ batting average is one of the worst. He has scored just 68 runs at an average of 9.71 in seven innings, with a highest of 25.

14 – Tom Latham has been dismissed between 20 and 85, 14 times in his Test career, which is only 26 innings old. It was the fourth time in the series that he has been dismissed between 20 and 85, having scored 47, 29, 36, 15 and 50 in his five innings in the series.

15 – Peter Siddle became the 15th Australian bowler to take 200 Test wickets. When he picked up the wicket of Doug Bracewell, he achieved the distinction of being the 11th fast bowler to achieve that milestone for Australia.

18 – Mitchell Starc has picked up 18 wickets at an average of 12.83 in his three day-night first-class games in Adelaide. His figures of 24/3 in this Test was his least impressive outing with the pink, as his other two yielded seven and eight wickets in an innings, respectively.

23.5 – Kane Williamson’s batting average against Mitchell Starc is the worst among all the Australian bowlers he has faced in this series. He averages 23.5 against Starc, while against the rest, he averages a staggering 186. Of the four times he has been dismissed in the series, twice it has been by Starc, against whom he also has an inferior strike rate.

29.40 – The first-wicket partnership for New Zealand in this series is 29.40, with just a solitary fifty partnership. Despite the failure in Adelaide, Australia’s opening partnership in the series is 102.60

69.50 – Despite being dismissed cheaply on day one, David Warner averages 69.50 at Adelaide. His score of 1, was also only the second time in 9 Test innings, that he has been dismissed for less than 25 at the Adelaide Oval.

1997 West Indies were the last team to be bowled out for less than 202 in the first innings of an Adelaide Test. In 1997, the Windies were bundled out for 130 and went onto lose the game by an innings and 183 after Australia scored 517 in their first innings.
