Stats: Cook equals Tendulkar's record for most Test losses in an away country
The rain looked like it might save England's blushes in Perth but as the clouds went away, so did England's hopes of clinging on for a draw. Josh Hazlewood's five-wicket haul meant that Australia beat England by an innings and 41 runs and helped the hosts take an unassailable 3-0 lead and reclaim the Ashes.
Steve Smith's double century flattened England after the visitors managed over 400 runs in the first innings for the first time on this tour. Australia's pace trio of Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood and Pat Cummins finished the job on the final day, with some help from off-spinner Nathan Lyon.
Here are some interesting numbers from the final day's play:
0 - No player has lost more away Tests in a country than Alastair Cook. The England opener lost his 14th Test in Australia, equaling the record jointly-held by Sachin Tendulkar (14 in Australia) and Jack Hobbs (14 in Australia). While Sachin lost 14 in 20 Tests and Hobbs in 24, Cook has lost 14 of his 18 Tests in Australia.
1 - Australia are the first team to beat an opponent on eight consecutive occasions at the same venue. They have beaten England on their last eight meetings at Perth, beating the previous record of 7 held by Australia, who beat WI seven times at Melbourne.
3 - The last three times that England have posted in excess of 400 in the first innings of an away Test, they have lost by an innings. Against India (Mumbai and Chennai, 2016) and Australia (Perth 2017)
4 - After scoring over 400 runs in the first innings, England have lost by an innings for the fourth time, the most of any team. Pakistan and Sri Lanka have done it once.
7 - England have now lost seven consecutive Tests away from home in Tests (November 2016 - December 2017). That is longest losing streak away from home, equaling their previous worst of 7 from January 1993 to April 1994.
8 - England have now lost eight successive games at the WACA, from 1991 to 2017. This is the longest losing streak at a venue for any team, equaling Zimbabwe's record of eight at QSC Bulawayo from 2004 to 2017.
8 - England have now lost their last eight Tests in Australia, equaling their worst losing streak down under (between 1920 and 1925).
33 - Australia have now won 33 Ashes series, one more than England's 32.
194 - Dawid Malan's tally of 194 runs at the WACA is the most by an English batsman at the ground in a Test.
403 - England's 403 in the first innings is now the highest first innings total at the WACA in a losing cause. The previous record was held by India, who scored 402 in 1977 but still lost the Test.
