Stats: Cricketers representing two countries (captains, players, umpires)
There are 23 cricketers in the history of the game who have represented two different countries in their international career. Of late, England’s policy of looking for cricketers from their neighbouring minnow countries – Ireland and Scotland – have seen them dishing out national caps to players who have already represented another country at the highest level on a regular basis. This has indeed become a concern for the feeder teams, who are left back to level 1 – assembling a competitive unit again.
England have managed to attract the likes of Eoin Morgan, Boyd Rankin and Edmund Joyce – three of Ireland’s finest players in the last generation. While Morgan has become a permanent fixture in the England side, having even captained them in Alastair Cook’s absence, fast bowler Rankin made his Test debut earlier this year. Joyce, however, after making the initial switch, returned back to Ireland, as he lost his place due to poor showings in England colours.
Dirk Nannes, a veteran by the time he switched cricketing loyalties from the Dutch to Australia, enjoyed a year at helm, representing them in a T20 World Cup, before his age started getting the better of him.
