Trans-Tasman T20 Tri-Series: New Zealand vs England Stats- Hales and Malan outshine Guptill and Williamson

<p>

In a crucial match to both the sides, Kane Williamson proved his worth in the shortest format with a classy 72 off 46 balls to give his side the first win of the series. After Martin Guptill gave a blazing start to the team, it was Kane Williamson who took the anchor role and lead his team to a total that just proved enough. Despite a twin strike from Adil Rashid which got rid of Guptill and de Grandhomme in consecutive balls, New Zealand never put the breaks down. Williamson, who was in Guptill's company, now found support from timely cameos of Mark Chapman and Tim Seifert, both in their first game for New Zealand.

In the chase of 197, Alex Hales along with David Malan, were fully up to the challenge. After Alex Hales was dismissed scoring a blistering 24 ball 47, David Malan once again couldn't find much support with the wickets were tumbling at the other end. England eventually lost by 12 runs and now they have to pray that Australia shall beat New Zealand in the next match.

Here's a look at the important numbers from the match.

1 – This is the first time in the seven innings Colin Munro bowled where he finished with an economy rate of less than 6.

2 – Mark Chapman is the second cricketer to play for Hong Kong and another team in international cricket. The previous player was Ryan Campbell who played a couple of ODIs for Australia before representing Zimbabwe in the World T20.

2 – Mark Chapman is only the second player after Eoin Morgan to win his debut international match for two different countries. Chapman made his international debut for Hong Kong when they stunned Bangladesh in a low scoring match at the 2014 World T20.

2 – Martin Guptill and Kane Williamson both have 14 and 8 fifties in T20Is respectively. But it is only the second fifty for Guptill as well as Williamson in a T20I tournament of more than two teams.

2 – This is the second golden duck for Colin de Grandhomme in just his 16th T20I innings.

3 – This is the third time where both the teams scored over 180 in a T20I match in New Zealand. New Zealand emerged victorious in all of them.

4 – This is Kane Williamson’s fourth score in the 70s in T20 international cricket. Interestingly his highest scores in the format are 73*, 72*, 72 and 70.

4 – This is the fourth time Buttler is captaining England in T20Is. Curiously, all the four matches are against different teams and different host nations. Buttler captained against Pakistan at Dubai in 2015, against South Africa at Cardiff in 2017, against Australia at MCG earlier and against New Zealand at Wellington today.

5 – This is the fifth consecutive innings where Jason Roy failed to cross double figures in T20Is. Previously, he never had such a streak of over two matches.

9 – Tom Seifert becomes the ninth New Zealander to keep wickets after Brendon McCullum, Peter McGlashan, BJ Watling, Gareth Hopkins, Tom Latham, Luke Ronchi, Glenn Phillips and Tom Blundell.

14 – This is Martin Guptill’s 14th fifty plus score in T20 international cricket. He needs only one more fifty to equal Brendon McCullum's record for the most fifties by a New Zealander in T20Is.

21 – David Willey’s score in this match, now his career best in 13 innings. This is despite having two centuries at the domestic T20 level.

22 – Number of times New Zealand posted 175+ in the first innings of a T20 international match, including this one. They won each of the 22 matches, that includes a tied match against Sri Lanka in 2010 which they won via Super Over.

40.40 – Alex Hales’ average in T20 internationals in the second innings, which crossed forty for the first time. Remarkably, his first innings average is just 24.60.
