Stats: Fastest fifties in T20 cricket - Colin Munro's knock makes it into top 10, three Indians feature
Colin Munro’s 14-ball fifty against Sri Lanka on Sunday is the latest proof of how approach to batsmanship has evolved in the last few years. With 56 off 13 overs to get when he came on to the crease, conventional logic would have dictated that he put up a run-a-ball-partnership with Kane Williamson.
Munro was not ruled by conventional wisdom, however, as his 14-ball stay at the crease consisted of seven sixes and one four. He brought up his unbeaten half century off the last ball he faced with a six, which was also the last ball of the 10th over of the match, and the last ball of the monthlong New Zealand-Sri Lanka series.
New Zealand won the 2nd T20I against Sri Lanka at Eden Park, Auckland, on the back of yet another exhibition of attacking batting from the Kiwi batsmen. After Martin Guptill brought up his fifty in 19 balls to put up the fastest T20 half century by a Kiwi, his record was broken just 15 minutes later as Colin Munro reached his in 14 balls.
Munro has etched his name onto the record books as the scorer of the second fastest T20I fifty, the third fastest T20 fifty, and the fastest T20 fifty by any Kiwi.
The record of the fastest fifty belongs to Yuvraj Singh’s knock of similar madness, achieved in a 12-ball duration during India’s match against England in the 2007 T20 World Cup. This was the same match in which he pummeled Stuart Broad for six consecutive sixes in a row.
Yuvraj and Munro’s fifties are the only two from among the quickest ten that have come in international matches. Apart from Yuvraj, two other Indians feature on the list – Yusuf Pathan for his 15-ball fifty for Kolkata Knight Riders and Jagdeesha Suchith for Mysuru Warriors in the KPL.
