Stats: Cricketers who have won Man of the Match award most frequently in ODIs

Sir Viv Richards won Man of the Match award more frequently than anyone else in ODIs

Man of the Match awards in cricket may not always reflect the most popular choice for fans, but over a period of time, it’s a fair enough indicator of a player’s contribution towards winning matches for his team.

In the 3rd ODI between Sri Lanka and Pakistan on Saturday, Thisara Perera helped Sri Lanka bowl out Pakistan for 102, with an outstanding spell of 8-1-34-4. With this effort, he became the 14th Sri Lankan bowler to take 100 ODI wickets and also recieved his 9th man of the match awards in just 79 ODIs.

With a frequency of almost 9 matches per Man of the Match award, Perera is now among the top 10 cricketers who have recieved the award most frequently.

Sir Vivian Richards, who dominated like no other player of his era on the opposition, tops the list, followed by the great Gordon Greenidge. Hashim Amla’s consistency isn’t under question as he’s the 3rd most frequent recipient of the award in ODIs. Sachin Tendulkar, having played a mammoth 463 ODIs, is fourth on the list, clearly showing his contribution towards team’s cause.
