Chasing 213, India fell short of the target by only four runs in the decider and lost the series 2-1. After a successful ODI series, India slowed down a bit in the T20Is and allowed the Kiwis to dominate.

After being asked to bat, Munro's 40-ball 72 and Tim Seifert's 43 off 25 gave the perfect start New Zealand would have wanted. In death overs, Colin de Grandhomme ensured the hosts didn't lose the momentum with a quickfire 16-ball 30.

After losing Dhawan in the very first over, Rohit Sharma and Vijay Shankar put the chase on track by adding 75 runs off 46 balls for the second wicket. Rishabh Pant and Hardik Pandya kept the hopes alive for India with their useful cameos but in the space of 19 balls, India slipped from 121 for 2 to 145 for 6. Karthik and Krunal took India closer but couldn't take them past the finish line.

Prior to this game, both teams had won a game apiece in the series. New Zealand crushed the visitors by 80 runs in the first T20I but India bounced back to make it 1-1
