Stats: Mayank Agarwal breaks records in stellar Vijay Hazare campaign
Mayank Agarwal, courtesy his 81 for Karnataka in the Vijay Hazare Trophy semi-final against Maharashtra yesterday, became the highest ever run-getter in a single season of the competition, with an aggregate of 663.
Agarwal overtook Srivats Goswami and Dinesh Karthik who had 568 and 607 runs in a season respectively. The Karnataka batsman also broke the record for the most number of sixes hit in a single season, having now struck 15 maximums. The previous record too was held by Goswami who had 14 sixes to his name.
Agarwal has been in scintillating touch this domestic season and finished as the leading run-scorer in the Ranji Trophy as well, although he couldn't lead Karnataka to the title. He has carried that form into the shorter format and even has a chance to add to his tally when he takes the field for the final, on February 27.
The 27-year-old began the campaign with a century against Baroda and 84 against Assam and followed it up with scores of 28 and 102, against Punjab and Odisha respectively. Another half-century, against the Railways, was the perfect preparation for him ahead of Karnataka's all-important quarter-final fixture against Hyderabad. He looked in complete command from the get-go, striking a majestic 140 off just 111 balls to cement his side's spot in the semis, where they took on Maharashtra.
In pursuit of a meagre 161, Agarwal looked at ease, adding a further 81 runs to his tally and sending his side into the final in the process. From his seven matches so far, he is averaging a ridiculous 90.42 and striking at 107.1 with 3 centuries and 3 half-centuries to boot.
His form also earned him an IPL contract and he is set to turn out for Kings XI Punjab in the 2018 edition.
