Stats: Top 10 highest team scores in World Cup history

Virender Sehwag’s century helped India post a mammoth total against Bermuda

India’s total of 413 for 5 in a group game of the 2007 World Cup in Port of Spain is the highest score made by a team in a World Cup encounter. Thanks to a century by Virender Sehwag and quick-fire contributions from the middle order, the Indians reached the mammoth score batting first and eventually won the game by 257 runs. Next on the list is Sri Lanka’s score of 398 for 5, which they made versus Kenya at Kandy during the 1996 edition of the tournament that was held in the subcontinent.

Australia make their first appearance in the list at third spot for their tally of 377 for 6 against South Africa in the 2007 World Cup. India occupies the fourth and fifth positions in the list. Thanks to centuries from Sourav Ganguly and Rahul Dravid, they posted a huge score of 373 for 6 against Sri Lanka at Taunton in the 1999 World Cup. Sehwag, meanwhile, set the Sher-e-Bangla stadium alight during the opening contest of the 2011 World Cup, by smashing a 140-ball 175 that propelled India to 370 for 4 in their 50 overs.

New Zealand come in at sixth place for their demolition of a hapless Canadian attack in the 2007 World Cup, followed by the West Indies, who scored 360 for 5 against Sri Lanka at Karachi, courtesy of a 125-ball 181 not out by Vivian Richards.

Australia occupy the number 8 slot for their score of 360 for 2 that they scored in the final of the 2003 edition in South Africa, against India. The Aussies are then tied with the Black Caps, for their scores of 358 that they made against two minnows in the 2007 and 2011 editions of the quadrennial event, respectively.
