Stats: Virat Kohli claims record of most Test runs as Indian captain
India began day three with a slender lead on a tricky pitch but by the time they were dismissed, they had managed to wrestle complete control of the game thanks to crucial knocks from Virat Kohli, Ajinkya Rahane and Bhuvneshwar Kumar. It was also a day that saw Kohli overtake MS Dhoni to claim yet another Indian record in what is already proving to be a stellar return with the bat as captain.
When a target of 150 looked to be a match-winning one considering the nature of the wicket, India finished with 247 and set the hosts a stiff target of 241 to win and claim a whitewash over India. The two players India recalled for the third Test proved to be the major difference as both Rahane and Bhuvneshwar Kumar were involved in a crucial partnership
Here are some interesting numbers from the day:
1 - Virat Kohli now tops the list of Indian captains with most Test runs. In the second innings, he overtook MS Dhoni, who previously held the record with 3,454 runs. Dhoni scored those runs in 96 innings while Kohli has overtaken him after just 57 innings as captain.
2 - Only two teams have successfully managed to chase a target in excess of 220 against India. Australia chased 339 at Perth in 1977 while West Indies chased 276 at Delhi in 1987. The Proteas will have to score 241 to become just the third team to do that.
3 - Among captains with at least 3,000 Test runs, Virat Kohli's average of 65.20 is the third-best. Only Don Bradman (101.51) and Steve Smith (76.45) have a better average as Test captain.
4 - Ajinkya Rahane's difference between away average and home average is 18.42, which is the fourth-largest difference of any batsman with at least 1,000 runs. Only Mohinder Amarnath (21.42), Darren Bravo (21.04) and Ken Barrington (18.47) have a larger difference.
13.67 - The average of the Indian openers in this series is their second-lowest tally in a Test series (3+). They averaged 13.58 in their tour of South Africa in 1996/97.
18 - Kohli is now 18th on the list of most runs as Test captain. His tally of 3,456 runs has come from just 57 innings at an average of 65.20.
55 - The 55-run partnership for the seventh wicket between Ajinkya Rahane and Bhuvneshwar Kumar is the highest partnership for India in the innings. This is the third time in four innings that Bhuvneshwar has been involved in the highest partnership.
