Steve Smith achieves joint-second highest points in latest ICC Test rankings
After a stunning display of batsmanship that helped his side regain the Ashes in style, Steve Smith reached close to Don Bradman's highest-ever point ratings in the latest ICC Test rankings released after the end of the third Ashes Test.
Smith is now tied with Len Hutton on the second spot, having reached 945 points after his scintillating 239 helped Australia secure an unassailable 3-0 lead over England.
Smith jumped seven points after his Perth performances, in the process, overtaking Peter May, Ricky Ponting and Jack Hobbs. He now stands only 16 points away from Bradman’s tally of 961 points.
Smith has had a minimum of 918 points in the last one year, 25 higher than the current rating of Virat Kohli, who is currently second placed.
Apart from Smith, England's Dawid Malan jumped 47 places to reach a career-best 52nd spot, while Australia's comeback man, Mitchell Marsh moved up 44 places to reach 65.
In the bowlers' rankings, Josh Hazlewood moved into the top-5 by usurping Sri Lanka's Rangana Herath, while James Anderson continued to stay on top of the rankings.
For India, Cheteshwar Pujara moved one place up, and is now third behind Smith and Kohli in the batting charts. Ravindra Jadeja and Ravichandran Ashwin continue to be the top-ranked Indian bowlers, occupying the third and fourth spot respectively.
