Steve Waugh lets Shane Warne's personal attack go 'through to the keeper'

Shane Warne and Steve Waugh during their playing days

Steve Waugh has given the perfect reaction to the stinging attack on him launched by his former deputy in the Australian team, Shane Warne. Warne, who is participating in a reality television show called ‘I’m a Celebrity, Get me out of here’, said on the show that he did not like the Australian captain for a variety of reasons, and that he was the most selfish player he had played with.

Waugh has reacted to the comments thrown at his way to Fox Sports, with the characteristic calm that defined his stay at the crease during his playing days.

“I will let that one through to the keeper,” Waugh said.

“I don’t want to justify it with a reaction.”

The major reason why Warne held a grudge against Waugh, as he said recently, is that he was dropped on a tour of West Indies 17 years ago – a decision that Waugh had justified by saying that the team selection was the captain’s call.

Geoff Marsh, who was Australia’s coach in 1999, the only other person involved in the fateful meeting, also reacted to the latest outpouring, saying, “It’s sad when they’ve had so much success together.”

Warne and Waugh were the two most senior figures in the most successful cricket side in recent times, and that they could forget their personal differences for the good of their profession speaks a lot about the Australian way of going about things.
