Steve Waugh: Virat Kohli needs to reign in his 'enthusiasm'
In a recent visit to the city of Bangalore in India, Steve Waugh has said that Virat Kohli will have to reign in his ‘enthusiasm’ to be a good captain in the future.
The former Australian captain feels that Kohli definitely had the potential to be a future leader of the Indian cricket team, but he has to keep his emotions in check at times.
“Virat Kohli is a talented player and a potential captain for sure. He is very exciting and has got passion for sure, which is good, but he sometimes needs to pull that enthusiasm inside a bit. He will make a good leader one day,” Waugh said.
Kohli had argued vehemently with the umpires in a recent ODI against Zimbabwe, when he was given out caught. The ball was close to the turf when the fielder picked it up, causing Kohli to intervene and ask the umpires to check with the third umpire.
Even after being given out by the third umpire, Kohli was seen having a heated exchange with the umpires.
Waugh also had high praise for the present Indian captain MS Dhoni and said that he had already won all trophies on offer.
“Dhoni has won every trophy you can possibly win. That is what he can do as a captain. He has done a brilliant job. Very aggressive, very positive and he has been a fine captain for India,” he had told reporters, according to Zee News.
When asked about Sachin Tendulkar, he said that it was quite amazing that he would soon be playing his 200th Test match which most people would think impossible. He believed that Sachin will hold most records, other than the Test average of Don Bradman.
Finally, he had some words of advice for the BCCI, by asking them to use their position for the betterment of cricket.
“At the end of the day, for the good of the sport, the longevity of the sport, the BCCI have got to see the bigger picture,” he signed off.
