Sunil Gavaskar appointed interim BCCI President by SC, CSK and RR cleared to participate in IPL 7

Sunil Gavaskar has been appointed the interim BCCI President by Supreme Court

Supreme Court on Friday cleared the way for the participation of Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals in IPL 7, ruling in its interim order for the sake of cricket lovers, it won’t restrain any team from participating in IPL.

The two-judge bench Justice AK Patnaik and Justice Fakkir Mohamed Ibrahim Kalifulla also appointed Sunil Gavaskar as the BCCI Head, replacing N Srinivasan, to take command of all IPL-related activities.

BCCI vice-president Shivlal Yadav will be overlooking all non-IPL related activities of the cricket body.

Any of the 5 Vice Presidents of BCCI can take over the post after the completion of the tournament, though Shivlal Yadav, who is also a former Test off-spinner, is the frontrunner for the top job currently.

Sunil Gavaskar won’t be doing commentary for BCCI for the period of IPL, but SC ruled that he will be ‘compensated’.

“Any Vice-president of the BCCI can take over after the IPL is over. Gavaskar will not be allowed to do commentary during the IPL but he will be compensated,” SC said.

Supreme Court also decreed that Gavaskar can appoint people of his choice as the interim BCCI President and approach the court for further directions. Gavaskar will also decide if IPL COO Sundar Raman should continue in his post, or remove him from his duties.

On Thursday, in its 3-point suggestion to BCCI, Supreme Court had suggested that BCCI stop CSK and RR from participating in IPL 7 owing to their alleged involvement in the IPL spot-fixing scam. It had also suggested that N Srinivasan step down and suggested Gavaskar’s name as his replacement. The third suggestion was the ban of all India Cements employees from any BCCI activity.

On Friday, it said that apart from players and commentators, no other India Cements employee should participate in any BCCI activity, clearing the way for MS Dhoni to continue as Indian and CSK skipper.

The IPL will now go ahead as per schedule. The first leg starts in UAE on April 16, 2014.
