Sunil Gavaskar buys shares in Singapore IPTL franchise
Legendary Indian batsman Sunil Gavaskar has bought shares in the Singapore franchise, one of the teams that is set to participate in the International Tennis Premier League (IPTL), a product of former world number 1 Indian tennis player Mahesh Bhupathi, ‘The Daily Telegraph’ revealed.
After being confirmed as one of the four shareholders of the franchise, which will be represented by the likes of Serena Williams, Andre Agassi and Tomas Berdych, ahead of the Wimbledon Championships, the 64-year-old said that he has always been a keen follower of the sport. It seems to have influenced his decision.
"I am a big tennis lover and I have followed the careers of Mahesh and his old doubles partner Leander Paes for years," said the cricketer-turned-commentator.
The matches of the IPTL, set to start this November, will span across four cities: Manila, Dubai, Singapore and Mumbai.
The tournament has attracted world’s best players; Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, Andy Murray, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, Victoria Azarenka, Ana Ivanovic, Caroline Wozniacki and former champions Pete Sampras, Patrick Rafter, Carlos Moya and Goran Ivanisevic have all agreed to be a part of it.
