Sunrisers Hyderabad's write-off Hanuma Vihari shines in England

Hanuma Vihari’s all-round performance led his club to victory

Hutton Cricket Club registered a clinical win in their Essex League first XI Division One match at the Oakfield ground in England, riding on an inspired performance by Hyderabad and Sunrisers Hyderabad’s 21-year-old Hanuma Vihari. Vihari scored an unbeaten 200 from just 117 balls — a knock that contained 23 boundaries and 10 sixes. The rest of his teammates managed 89 runs between themselves.

Vihari then came back in the second innings to pick up five crucial wickets — including that of the opener Umar Shafiq, who was batting on 55 — in 20 overs giving away 64 runs. Hutton CC (289/5 in 40 overs) defeated Hainault and Clayhall Cricket Club (255/9 in 52 overs) by 34 runs.

Vihari made his first-class debut in 2010, and was a part of India’s Under-19 World Cup-winning squad two years later. Known for his composure and his ability to handle pressure over sustained periods, Vihari failed to make an impact in the 2015 IPL for Sunrisers Hyderabad – managing a highest score of 16 against Mumbai Indians.

He was only played by his team for 5 matches. He travelled to England after his team’s elimination to offer his services in the Essex League.

At 21 years and 223 days, this true all-rounder – the leading batsman, captain, occasional bowler and wicket keeper for Hyderabad – has given a timely reminder that he is one of the brightest stars in the Ranji Trophy and the Indian domestic scene.
