Suryakumar Yadav's birthday: 5 big records he's likely to break in his career

Suryakumar Yadav celebrates his 34th birthday today, September 14, 2024. The talented and stylish batter, hailing from Mumbai, had made a name for himself in world cricket, especially when it comes to the shortest format of the game.

Suryakumar Yadav shot to fame first during his time with the Kolkata Knight Riders in the Indian Premier League (IPL), where he gave the world a glimpse of his 360-degree hitting ability. However, it was only when he moved to the Mumbai Indians that he displayed his full potential and class with the bat.

Though it was not before 2021 that he broke into the Indian team, Suryakumar Yadav has now become a household name. He has established himself as one of the most dangerous batters, particularly in T20 cricket, known for his fearless approach and wide range of shots, some of which go against the 'textbook' as well.

The star batter has not only been in the limelight for his batting but also some incredible moments on the field. His spectacular catch in the final of the 2024 T20 World Cup to dismiss David Miller and turn the tide in India's favor will remain one of the highlights of his career.

As he celebrates yet another birthday, here are five big records Suryakumar Yadav can break in his career that has already been impressive so far.

Suryakumar Yadav's birthday: 5 big records he's likely to break in his career

#5 Highest run-scorer in T20Is

Suryakumar Yadav, known for his exploits in the shorter format, has already made giant strides in his T20I career. He has amassed 2432 runs from 71 innings in T20Is.

India's veterans Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli currently lead the charts for the most runs scored in T20I cricket. While Rohit has 4231 T20I runs and is at the top at the moment, Virat follows with 4188 runs. Suryakumar is currently 19th on the list of highest run-scorers in T20Is.

However, with Rohit and Virat bidding adieu to T20Is, he can certainly go on to break the record and claim the top spot on the list. He is already third on the list when it comes to most run-scorers in T20Is for India alone.

#4 Most 'Player of the Series' awards in T20Is

As we already know about his prowess in T20Is, another record lies ahead of Suryakumar that he can definitely go on to break.

India's Virat Kohli holds the record for the most number of 'Player of the Series' awards in T20Is currently, with seven awards from 125 games and 46 series.

Suryakumar is already second on this list with five awards from just 71 games and 20 series. Although Babar Azam (5 awards from 35 series), David Warner (5 awards from 42 series), and Shakib Al Hasan (5 awards from 45 series) are also tied with Yadav, he is most likely to own this record should he continue to play the way he does.

#3 Most Sixes in T20Is

Suryakumar Yadav has captivated one and all with his brilliant strokeplay combined with power-hitting. In his T20I career, he has smashed bowlers out of the park time and again.

He is known for his six-hitting ability. Looking at the records, he has registered 136 sixes in his T20I career. Suryakumar is fifth on the list of batters with the most sixes in T20I cricket.

Rohit Sharma tops this list as well with 205 sixes. However, this record also seems to be well within Surya's reach to make his own.

#2 Most T20I hundreds

In just 71 T20I games and 68 innings, Suryakumar already had four hundreds to his name. While he can change the tide of the game with his quickfire knocks, he can also play the long innings and record three figures.

The 34-year-old is only behind Glenn Maxwell (5) and fellow Indian Rohit Sharma (5) on the list of the most T20I hundreds.

With a deficit of just one century, this is another record that he is most likely to break in his career.

#1 Highest win percentage for India as T20I captain (Min. 30 matches)

While there has been enough talk about Suryakumar Yadav's heroics with the bat and the records he can break, there is also a captaincy record that the Mumbaikar would love to have to his name.

With Rohit retiring from T20Is, Suryakumar is the current skipper of India in the format. As captain, Yadav has seven wins from 10 games and a win percentage of 70%, which is only second to Rohit's win percentage of 79.03% as T20I captain of India.

Kohli has captained India in 50 T20Is and has a win percentage of 60% while MS Dhoni has a 56.94 win percentage from 72 matches as captain. Considering the criteria of a minimum of 30 matches as T20I captain, Suryakumar could go on to break Rohit's record too.
