Reports: Team India superfan Sudhir Gautam attacked by Bangladeshi mob

India superfan Sudhir Gautam attends a 2015 World Cup match

Sudhir Gautam, the superfan who follows the Indian cricket team on all their home and away campaigns, has claimed to have been attacked by Bangladesh fans in Mirpur, after India's loss in the second ODI on Sunday. A passionate devotee of the team and its heroes, Sudhir’s visa for the 2015 World Cup was arranged by Sachin Tendulkar himself.

Sudhir said that as soon as the match got over, bringing up a historic maiden series win for Bangladesh over their stronger neighbours, he was mobbed by Bangladeshi fans and his auto pelted with stones.

"As soon as I left the stadium, people mobbed me and started snatching the tricolour, breaking the handle of the flag. Two policemen who were outside the stadium came to my rescue and they escorted me to an auto-rickshaw.

“But the mob further attacked the auto and tried to break into it. They even hurled stones on the vehicle but luckily the auto was covered completely and I didn't get hurt."

Sudhir is the most visible India cricket fan and is seen by many as the representative of the support the national team gets from the people of the country, sometimes bordering on madness. This was his 8th visit to Bangladesh, a fateful visit where he was himself at the wrong side of the madness that sometimes exists around cricket.
