This team may be the best India has ever produced, says Sunil Gavaskar

India v Sri Lanka - ICC Champions Trophy

What's the story?

The Indian team have been on a rampage, brushing aside every single team that have come their way. Over the last few months, Virat Kohli's men have been firing across all three departments and a majority of the fans rate this side as the best team India have ever produced.

Former Indian skipper Sunil Gavaskar echoed the same thoughts as he praised the current lot by calling them the best Indian side ever.

In an exclusive interview with NDTV, Gavaskar said, “India are firing on all cylinders. Their batting is looking good. The bowling has got a sharp to edge to it and the fielding is outstanding. I believe India have the potential to win the series for the first time in South Africa. The crucial thing is they are peaking at the right time. So I am hopeful that this time India will put one across the Proteas. It is difficult to compare, depends on the opposition, playing conditions. But this is one which is right up there because of the balance they have. This team may be the best India have ever produced.”

In case you didn't know...

The Indian team are currently playing Sri Lanka in a three-match Test series and this will be followed by three ODIs and three T20Is.

The details

Ever since Kohli took over as captain, the side haven't lost a bilateral series, reaching the number one spot in Tests and ODIs. Kohli's men defeated Sri Lanka, South Africa, England, New Zealand, Australia, West Indies and Bangladesh and are set to win their ninth consecutive Test series.

In ODIs, the team got the better of England, Australia, New Zealand, West Indies, Sri Lanka and made it to the final of the 2017 ICC Champions Trophy.

What's next?

After the ongoing series, the team will tour South Africa for three Tests, six ODIs and three T20Is. Apart from the South Africa tour, the Indian team will tour England, Australia and New Zealand in the next 15 months.

Author's take

Without a doubt, the Indian team are doing well of late and credit has to be given to the players for putting up some sensational performances.

That said, the real test for the team starts on January 5, 2018, when they take on the Proteas in the first Test. If they somehow manage to do well overseas, one can proudly say that this is indeed the best team India have ever produced.
