TNPL 2016: We were confident we could defend 137, says Lyca Kovai Kings' batsman Suryaprakash
Lyca Kovai Kings opening batsman L Suryaprakash addressed the media after their team beat Chepauk Super Gillies on Monday in the India Cements Tamil Nadu Premier League.
Your first innings was slow. What was the reason for that?
Our start was little slow but after that the batsmen did well. The wicket was slightly slower from the one we played on first. It took us a little while to read the wicket.
It was a very topsy-turvy match. What were your thoughts?
That’s T20 and that's what makes it so exciting. It was thrilling to play this game.
What was your plan to defend the low total?
In our first match, too, we had a low-score and we defended it well and took it to the Super Over. Basically we have a very good bowling attack and we back them. We were confident we could defend 137 throughout the game. Even when they started with a good opening partnership or had good stands, our confidence level remained the same.
What are your thoughts on the Tirunelveli ground?
It’s an outstanding ground, the atmosphere was great and the crowd was superb throughout the innings.
Chepauk Super Gillies wicketkeeper Gopinath addressed the media after the team’s 11-run loss to the Lyca Kovai Kings in the India Cements TN Premier League match at the India Cements Limited Ground, Sankarnagar Tirunelveli, on Monday.
Where did you think you lost the game?
We lost the game in the 20th over in which we gave away those three sixes to M Mohammed. I think that cost us the game. We could have bowled better in the middle overs because we gave away too many runs during that time. We should have restricted them to a score of 120, but we gave away 15 runs extra.
Did the batsmen throw their wickets away?
I guess yes. We got a good start and we thought we could take it to the 10th over. Had I carried on for three or four overs more, things would have been easier. So the first mistake was mine. After that, R Sathish's wicket was a vital moment in the match. Towards the end, Gowjith (Subash’s) run-out also cost us dear. If he had stayed till the end, he would have finished the match. After he got out, there were five dots. That cost us the match because we lost by 11 runs.
The first game saw the team batting first score 200-plus...
The wicket was on the slower side when we were playing, but it wasn’t unplayable. They used the slower ball better than us and that is where our batsmen mistimed a lot of deliveries. Their use of the slower ones changed the game.
