UAE U-19 collapse from 34/0 to 50 all out against Nepal U-19
We have seen a number of batting collapses in recent weeks, owing to poor temperament by batsmen in the Ashes and the Sri Lanka-India series, but the mother of all collapses was played out in a U-19 World Cup qualifying match at the Bayuemas Oval in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, on Friday – 10 wickets being lost for 16 runs.
Winning the toss, the Nepali side elected to bat first and put up 199 runs on the board. In reply, UAE U-19 started strongly and looked on course to reach the target of 200, moving to 34/0 in the eighth over.
However, a sort of cricket miracle was played out from there on, more common in amateur cricket than ICC events. Just 13 overs later, the UAE side had lost all ten wickets for just 16 runs, to be bowled out for 50 and lose the match by 149 runs.
Only two UAE batsmen, Waruna Perera and Zafri Zafardeen, were able to register runs in double figures scoring 32 and 12 runs respectively.
Nepal took the last nine wickets for 10 runs as the batsmen were dismissed with the score on 44, 45, 45, 46 and then the big wicket of Perera with the score on 47. The score had moved from 34/0 to 47/6 – the match virtually over.
They then lost their last four wickets without scoring as No.10 Atharva Kavi finished not out on 0.
Left-arm orthodox bowler Sushil Kandel did the damage for Nepal, taking 4-7 from seven overs, while off-spinner Sunil Dhamala took 3-12 from seven overs.
In a further sensational turn of events, the UAE side bounced back in fine style with a crushing 165-run win over Saudi Arabia just 24 hours later on Saturday.
The Asian Cricket Council event in Malaysia, which acts as a qualifier for the 2016 Under-19 World Cup, features six nations and will wrap up on Thursday.
