Unmukt Chand - Yet another remarkable performance

The young cricketing sensation Unmukt Chand has again scored a ton in the Ranji trophy against Mumbai. This youngster has really been making waves!

Before we move forward, I intend to draw the attention toward the impressive average of Unmukt Chand which is 40.23 in the first class, 36.69 in List A matches and 20.90 in T20s.

He has a special quality in his batting – he goes for his shots early and is always able to strike the ball cleanly. In one of the articles about Unmukt, it has been opined that he has got the aggression and guts of Virat Kohli – so very true!

Also, few observers have noticed that the confidence of Unmukt stands him distinctively apart from the rest of the upcoming young players. Most of the seniors have already shown tremendous faith in him. The way he carries himself in a rather composed manner has surely entitled him with the label of the most promising upcoming young player.

In this world of competitive cricket, only the bold yet composed batsmen are able to sustain in the long run. Unmukt Chand has apparently got all the necessary ingredients of a reliable batsman able to play long innings. He also has the ability to fast track the score as per the need of the hour. Someone had correctly said that once he is settled, it is very difficult to get him out. What appears most fascinating to me is his level of concentration and focus.

I can foresee that he is going to capture the scene in a short span of say 3-4 years or even earlier. He could rise just when many of the batsmen of the current squad will be on the verge of retirement.

What seems furthermore impressive is that in his 27 first class matches played so far, he has already scored 4 centuries. Overall, he has scored a total of eight centuries in his career across first class, list A and 20-20 matches. Just imagine, he is going to complete 21years of age in march 2014. Amazing, is it not?

Now let us have a brief look at his profile. Chand playsfor Delhi, Delhi Daredevils, India-A, India under-19s and India under-23s.He is currently pursuing studies in the prestigious St. Stephens College, University of Delhi.

Unmukt came to the lime light when he struck unbeaten111 runs against the hosts Australia in the under 19 world cup in 2012. Prior to that, while studying in Modern School New Delhi, he scored 151 runs in the Ranji Trophy. (Incidentally, Gautam Gambhir was his senior in the same school)

Unmukt Chand is the most promising player amongst the emerging young talent. Though, with the emergence of batsmen like Vijay Zol, Sanju Samson and Mandeep Singh, the competition of for places in team India is getting intense.

Performances like the one yesterday fortify his claims of being a future leader as well. However, there is significant scope for improvement which will come with time.

He could turn out to be a long term replacement for Virender Sehwag – for Delhi and for India as well. Best wishes!
