VB Chandrasekhar feels that Risabh Pant should not try to break records every time

Delhi youngster Rishabh Pant created history by scoring the fastest first-class century by an Indian on Tuesday, achieving the feat in just 48 deliveries. Former International V.B. Chandrasekhar who was the joint record holder before Pant’s innings congratulated the 19-year old and also reminded him that he should try to break records every time he in the middle of the 22-yards.

Delhi followed on in the second innings after getting dismissed for 334 in reply to Jharkhand’s 493. Pant, who also scored a century in the first innings, continued his good form in the next as well and his side ended the game on 480 for the loss of 6 wickets in the match which ended in a draw.

Pant finished the innings on 135 from 67 balls which included 13 sixes and 8 boundaries, scoring at a rate over 200. Chandrasekhar thrashed a 56-ball century for Tamil Nadu in an Irani Trophy match back in 1988, which helped him gain a berth in the national team.

“Congratulations to Rishab Pant. If it has taken 28 years to break the fastest 100 in first class cricket Rishab should be well advised not to try it every time he walks into bat,” Chandrasekhar said.

Known for his dynamic batting, Chandrasekhar was surprised of the fact that it took 28 long years for someone to break the record in a T20 dominated the cricketing world. “A little surprised in this day and age of T20 cricket the record stayed that long,” stated the veteran.

The Chennai-born played 7 ODIs for India and also scored a half-century, while he has scored a run less than 5000 in his first class career while representing Tamil Nadu and Goa.

Once a national selector, Chandrasekhar said that the youngster was a much talked about player in the cricketing world due to his ability to play attacking cricket.

“Saw Rishab bat during the IPL. He was virtually the talking point of players who will play for the country. Extremely happy to see him make the strides. Wishing him consistency and a long career ahead.”

Pant has had a superb time in the Ranji Trophy so far, having smashed a triple hundred as well early on and he will look to carry his good form forward into the remaining matches as well.
