Video: Ajinkya Rahane's sporting gesture towards Temba Bavuma shows spirit of gentleman's game

Ajinkya Rahane sweeps on way to his unbeaten 89

Ajinkya Rahane’s 89* on Day 1 of the Kotla Test was the highest score of the 4-match series against South Africa, and his workmanlike knock has set him up for his 1st Test ton on Indian soil – two bizarre statistics to have surfaced from the first day’s play.

Rahane came in at No. 5 with the score at 66, and was unbeaten at stumps, looking confident against all the South African bowlers. However, it is a gesture he showed towards a South African fielder during his innings that prove he is one of the most gentlemanly players of what was once called the gentleman’s game.

He swept one hard from Dane Piedt towards Temba Bavuma, who was fielding at short leg. The ball hit him on his hand and he was seen in pain. Rahane immediately went to him to make sure he was all right – a rare moment when a batsman shows concern for one of the opposition.
