Australia came to Kolkata after winning the first Test match of the series in Mumbai. Also, the Steve Waugh led Aussie side were unbeaten for 16 Test matches before they faced Sourav Ganguly‘s men at Eden Gardens.
Batting first, Australia posted 445 runs and bowled out India for just 171 runs in the first innings. High on confidence, Waugh asked the Indian team to follow-on. Little did the Australian captain know that his decision would backfire so terribly that it will inspire an entire generation of cricket fans. VVS Laxman and Dravid rescued India and scored 281 and 180 respectively to lead their side to a total of 657, taking a lead of 383. Aussies were bowled out for 212 on the final day, courtesy of a magical spell from the off-spinner Harbhajan Singh.
