The West Indian skipper, Darren Sammy along with Johnson Charles arrived at the Hewanorra International Airport in St. Lucia on 5 April 2016 after their successful venture at the recently concluded ICC T20 World Cup 2016 in India.
The West Indian side defeated their English counterpart in the final encounter of the tournament at the Eden Gardens last Sunday to clinch their second ICC T20 World Cup title since its inception back in 2007.
The 27-year-old Carlos Brathwaite hit four consecutive sixes of the final Ben Stokes over to steer the Caribbean side over the victory line in the big final.
The Caribbean duo was greeted with grandeur in a homecoming victory parade that was organized by the citizens of St. Lucia in their honor. Top political figures including Prime Minister Dr. Kenny Anthony and Sports Minister Hon. Shawn Edward were present at the airport to welcome the world champions.
Hundreds of St. Lucians flocked to the Hewanorra International Airport to catch a glimpse of the local heroes and as soon as Sammy and Charles stepped out, they were surrounded by the euphoric fans requesting the duo to pose for pictures and sign them autographs.
The carousel did not conclude there. After the initial round of celebrations, the St. Lucian duo was accompanied by those in attendance as they led a queue of jovial cricket aficionados to the north of the island in an extravagant motorcade.
Those who could not be a part of the merrymaking at the airport lined up on the sides of the main thoroughfare to catch a glimpse of Darren Sammy and Johnson Charles. The homecoming ceremony culminated in Castries, with the main event being held at the Derek Walcott Square.
