Video: India win Champions Trophy
India added the ICC Champions Trophy to their 2011 World Cup title on Sunday, beating England by five runs in a tense final that was reduced to 20 overs a side because of persistent early rain in Birmingham.
When the rain finally subsided at Edgbaston – England and India had just twenty overs each to contest the final of the Champions Trophy.
With the match shortened it was time for some early big hitting – and the tournament’s leading run scorer Shikhar Dhawan got India off to a steady start.
Ravi Bopara hit back though with figures of three wickets for twenty runs and England had India realing at 66 for five.
India steadied the ship though to finish their innings with 129 for six – Virat Kohli smashing this huge six deep into the Edgbaston crowd.
England looked to be on course for victory with Ravi Bopara and Eoin Morgan at the crease and going along nicely at 110 for four.
But with twenty needed from the remaining sixteen balls – and the tide very much in England’s favour – the unthinkable happened.
First the wicket of Morgan fell – followed the very next ball by Bopara.
With Stuart Broad and James Tredwell at the crease – England needed a six from the last ball for victory.
For England it wasn’t to be – and for India they add the Champions Trophy to their 2011 triumph in the world cup.
