Video: Reaction after opening day of the third Test between England and Australia

Reaction from Australia spinner Nathan Lyon and England batsman Jonathan Trott following the first day’s play in the fourth Ashes Test at Chester-le-Street in Durham.

Nathan Lyon, Australia spinner:

(on Australia’s bowling performance as a unit)

“Yeah, we bowled quite well. Our pace bowlers bowled fantastically but we’ve been well supported in the field with David Warner and Chris Rogers running around in the field, so we knew building pressure, that’s the way you take Test match wickets, that’s the way you play Test cricket, you’ve got to be patient. So, by building pressure from both ends, it’s going to cause, hopefully, an error somewhere along the line. so we’re happy with the way we bowled today, it was a disappointing finish for us to let Jimmy Anderson and a few of the guys hit a couple of boundaries, but we’re going to come back and bounce back tomorrow morning and hopefully our batters can have a good couple of days.”

Jonathan Trott, England batsman:

(on England’s meagre total and the ‘failure’ of England’s top order)

“No, I wouldn’t say it’s a serious concern, I’d say we were disappointed to have got ourselves into a good position and got ourselves into a bad position. Yeah, we’re not too sure what a good score will be – first innings – on that wicket. I think batting first was the correct decision, getting ourselves to, I think, about 150 for two, so in hindsight it was right and as a group pretty disappointed that we’ve ended the day behind.”

Jonathan Trott, England batsman:

(on the idea that England have got ahead of themselves going into this Test match)

“Yeah I don’t think you can try and go looking ahead and thinking that we’re going to go to the Oval 3-0 up, you just try and worry about winning this game and not look too far ahead. We’ve seen that happen – as individuals – we’ve seen that happen to ourselves, you get carried away and you think to yourself ‘it’s an easy game’. It’s still cricket and it’s very tough, so every Test match victory is very difficult and it can be done from the position we’re in today.”

Jonathan Trott, England batsman:

(on England players giving up their wickets too easily)

“Yeah, I think generally in cricket you get yourself out, or it’s pressure from the opposition, you play a shot to a ball which you shouldn’t have. It’s not too often you get unplayable deliveries, you would say that generally the fault’s on yourself as a batsman and I think we would all probably say that today.”
