Video: Sachithra Senanayake does a Mankad; runs out Jos Buttler
Huge controversy erupted in the 5th ODI between England and Sri Lanka at Edgbaston as Jos Buttler was Mankaded by Sachithra Senanayake.
The Sri Lankan spinner, who’s bowling action has come under the scanner recently, used the rarely seen mode of dismissal on Buttler having previously warned him about backing up too far at the non-striker’s end. Usually, a bowler warns a batsman if he feels that the latter is backing up too far and if the batsman repeats the same, the bowler is well within his right to dismiss the batter.
This is the fourth instance of Mankading in ODI cricket. The previous victims of this method of dismissal were Brian Luckhurst (against Australia), Grant Fowler (against New Zealand), and Peter Kirsten (against India), and the first one since 1992.
Former England captain Michael Vaughan expressed his displeasure via twitter.

A similar controversy had come about during the Commenwealth Bank series in 2012, when Indian spinner R Ashwin had attempted to run out Lahiru Thirimanne. The Sri Lankan batsman was called back after the appeal was withdrawn by Indian captain Virender Sehwag, following Sachin Tendulkar’s intervention. Interestingly, then Sri Lankan captain Mahela Jayawardene, who is playing in the ODI series against England, had criticised Ashwin for even thinking of the dismissal and had said that he doesn’t play like that.
